The opening session at North Carolina Rural Water Association’s Conference this year was one of the most packed sessions and it came as no surprise. It was about North Carolina’s Statewide Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Master Plan: The Road to Viability. The speakers included Kim Colson, who is the director of the Division of Water Infrastructure at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality and Francine Durso, who is the primary staff liaison to the State Water Infrastructure Authority. The State Water Infrastructure Authority (SWIA) was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013 to assess and make recommendations about the state’s water and wastewater infrastructure needs. We will have a recap of the session in the next edition of The Tarheel Pipeline, which should be available in early July. In the meantime, you can read the Master Plan here: Master Plan. One of the resources mentioned in the session was the affordability calculator. The calculator is a great resource when applying for grant funds. Get the calculator here: Affordability Calculator.
